Salerno as the gateway to the Coast
Salerno is the most convenient access point to the Amalfi Coast, especially if you arrive by train (high-speed links to Naples) or by car on the A3. Ferries and hydrofoils leave the tourist harbour for Amalfi, Positano, Minori and Maiori, with frequent sailings from April to October.
Compared with Naples or Sorrento, starting from Salerno usually means less traffic and easier access to the southern stretch of the peninsula. It is also a practical base if you want lower overnight prices and morning departures toward the Coast.
By sea: ferries and boat tours
Public ferries cover the main routes (Salerno–Amalfi–Positano and return). Private boat tours offer more flexibility: custom itineraries, swimming stops, and lunch on board. On SalernoGo look under the Boats category for local operators, boat type, routes and direct contacts.
Book at least a day ahead in summer weekends. State party size, preferred departure time and any needs (children, reduced mobility).
By land: NCC, taxi and bus
If you prefer the panoramic road, an NCC or taxi drops you at your destination without driving the SS163 yourself. Compare Taxi/NCC listings on SalernoGo, check the service area and ask for a quote with time and destination.
SITA buses connect Salerno to the Coast regularly, but they can be crowded in peak season. For groups or families, a private transfer is often simpler.
Day-trip tips
Leave early: mornings are quieter and restaurants less full. Bring cash for some parking areas and wear comfortable shoes. Amalfi and Minori are among the easiest villages to combine sea and old town.
Back in Salerno, use the evening on the Lungomare or in the Centro Storico for dinner and a walk before you head home.
